I lost ALL of my (not huge amount of) cellulite when I was a struggling college student in the 1970s. Without much money, I had to buy only nutrient-dense foods and also rode my bike A LOT (to work in the summer). I have since then (still the same weight today) believed that a diet low in sugar had something to do with the complete disappearance of cellulite. Could this be so, or was it the exercise alone?

Could you write about (maybe a number of articles ongoing and sporadic): We hear so much in ads about creams and now even face-scrubbing machines that "stimulate collagen production" these days. "Stimulates collagen production" seems to be the new buzz-word. However, in the 1980s a Boston dermatologist told me that the oollagen molecule is too large to be absorbed into the skin. What is supported by science here? Anything?

Hi, thanks for posting this up. So if lip glosses may cause cancer in the long run, what would you recommend for treating chapped lips? I know that drinking plenty of water and eating enough fruits would help, but surely many people want a more "visible" way of curing themselves.

This in excellent blog, by the way. I think my mum will like it. She's a dermatologist too.

It is important to keep checking for new or changing moles, particularly if you are at risk. Those that have had a melanoma removed may be cured but they are at high risk for recurrence of new melanomas. If you have a lot of moles it is very hard (impossible really) to be able to tell if new or changing ones are present though.

DermAlert is an image comparison software program developed through funding from the National Cancer Institute that is inexpensive and lets you use your digital camera in the privacy of your own home to find changing moles over time. Then you can point out the changes to your dermatologist. You can see details and demo at http://www.dermalert.com

Jen-
Yes, people can do this even if they acne. Acne is not caused by having oily skin; for people with sensitive skin and acne, minimizing face washing and using an acne treatment like retin A is a great way to treat acne without over-drying your face.

Shinygirl-
Ah, this is a common misconception. Sunscreens are not additive! If you apply an SPF 15 plus an SPF 15 you are getting ONLY SPF 15, not 30. The SPF is only of the highest sunscreen that you used.

Anne-
An SPF of 30 is usually enough -- if you are still burning, then apply more and remember to reapply every two hours if you are in the sun. It is hard to find a really good sunscreen that is noncomedogenic; in some ways you can't have both. Try the Neutrogena Healthy Defense 45.

Would you recommend this also for people with acne? For example I have dry sensitive skin and acne, and always find that after I wash my face it feels a bit parched.

Great Blog - useful info.

Maybe you can help me - I'm allergic to lots of things including parabens, which seems to be in everything.

I am looking for parabens-free products. I found a nice moisturising cream at http://www.exederm.com and other things at a British site called elave - now I would like to find parabens free shampoo

Any ideas ?

What about blogging about sensitive skin and hypoallergenic products

Keep up the good work

I suffer from chronic urticaria that's triggered by methyl and methane byproducts, topical contact with my own body fluids... yup you read correctly .. excercise, eucalyptus.. running water of any temperature or latitude across my feet causes severe pain, sweating, crying (its the worst, it burns my face and causes extreme pain for days), aerosols, the scent of gasoline mineral/baby oil.... Salivating during my sleeping hours typically causes me to wake up with severely swollen lips and my eyes swollen all but shut. The swelling typically recedes in a few hours but if the hives start... ack! My last bout with them lasted almost 4 solid months. I also have adrenal suppression so the typical prednisone relief is out of the question. I take typically hydroxyzine hydrochloride as an antihistimine and during severe flareups a 1-3 month treatment of cyclosporine.

This is a very real condition and can be both quite physically and emotionally exhausting.

With most things, there will always be positive and negative results. I think antioxidant supplements are still good, but in moderate amounts. Some people just do not take enough of the essentials, and that is where supplements come in. But if you are relying on them to actually cure or prevent a condition, then it might not be that straightforward.

Dr. B,
My husband actually is allergic to the laundry detergent I used to use. I was using just the usual powder detergent and he broke out. It started out small on his chest and arms b/c of the shirts I was washing. I told him it was just dry skin cuz he hardly ever puts any lotion so we started putting it on him. A week went by and it wasn't getting any better. Then when we got married he of course started sleeping in the bed with me and he broke out all over his body. The doctor didn't say it was from the detergent, just to think of anything we had done differently. So he came up with the laundry detergent. I didn't believe him at first. And of course I had a box full of detergent and I didn't want to buy anymore. Come to find out, his mom has always used a free and clear liquid detergent with no color and additives (His dad apparently had sensitivity to it too).I switched to a liquid and with that and the help of the salve the doc came him, he cleared right up.
We went on our honeymoon a couple weeks ago and he started breaking out again. The hotel uses powder detergent. That night we went to the grocery, picked up some liquid, washed the sheets and towels and he was fine. Luckily we brought the medicated salve with us, otherwise it would'nt have been a pleasant trip.
But I do believe that is people's first conclusion, "i broke out so it must be my detergent." You're right, it's not always the case. I guess my hubby is in that 1%.

That night we went to the grocery, picked up some liquid, washed the sheets and towels and he was fine. Luckily we brought the medicated salve with us, otherwise it would’nt have been a pleasant trip.
But I do believe that is people’s first conclusion, “i broke out so it must be my detergent.” You’re right, it’s not always the case. I guess my hubby is in that 1%.

I had problems with ingrown hairs from shaving for a long time. I recently have started to get rid of them by shaving the direction the hair grows and it has made a difference in just a couple of weeks. I actually picked this tip up by watching "Dirty Jobs" on Discovery, a great show. Mike Rowe was shaving a cow to perform a c-section on it and said he never shaves against the grain because it gives him razor bumps. I figured if its good enough for Mike Rowe its good enough for me.

You mentioned the witch hazel will sting, but the styptic stick (and I assume the antiperspirant) does too... a lot!!! But, it's worth it sometimes.

Summit Corporation plc announced a positive outcome from its repeat-dose Phase I clinical trial of SMT D002, its candidate for the treatment of seborrhoea (excessive sebum production), a primary cause of acne.
The results of this trial confirm the potential of SMT D002 as a new therapeutic agent for the treatment of seborrhoea in acne patients.
