Thanks @Jack. Some of the studies in that review suggested antioxidants might be beneficial, but it’s remarkable that none of the positive studies were well designed or were statistically significant. Unfortunately, we cannot use a poorly designed study to make any conclusion other than more research needs to be done.

Other, more recent reviews like this one http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18425980?ordinalpos=1&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_SingleItemSupl.Pubmed_Discovery_RA&linkpos=2&log$=relatedreviews&logdbfrom=pubmed

and this one http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18425980?ordinalpos=1&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_SingleItemSupl.Pubmed_Discovery_RA&linkpos=2&log$=relatedreviews&logdbfrom=pubmed showed antioxidants were harmful and increased mortality in some cancer patients.

Most people believe taking antioxidants are good for them. They are wrong. They should believe antioxidant supplements might be good for them, but might also be harmful to them. We lack sufficient information to recommend taking supplements (with few exceptions). Until we do, eat well instead.

Here, See this review article from NIH.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17367938

"The objective of this study is to systematically review the literature in order to compile results from randomized trials that evaluate concurrent use of antioxidants with chemotherapy"

"CONCLUSION: None of the trials reported evidence of significant decreases in efficacy from antioxidant supplementation during chemotherapy. Many of the studies indicated that antioxidant supplementation resulted in either increased survival times, increased tumor responses, or both, as well as fewer toxicities than controls; however, lack of adequate statistical power was a consistent limitation. Large, well-designed studies of antioxidant supplementation concurrent with chemotherapy are warranted."

And the take home message is... If you're looking for a way to increase your antioxidant intake, avoid tablet supplements. Instead, eat more fruit and vegetables and consider a super fruit beverage like Tahitian Noni Juice (http://www.tni.com/australia). There's a big difference between pill-based antioxidant supplements are good, natural, wholesome food products!

This is very true. Most vitamins due more harm than good. For instance, taking centrum is horrible. Your body only obsorbs less than 10% percent of the vitamin, and the remaining 90% percent become oxidants. Resulting in more cancer cells. There are many companies out there, like Melaleuca, who claim that if you take their vitamin you'll obsorb 75%percent of the vitamin.. and that's still not good. Why? Well there's 25% left to destroy you. If you have cancer, the only supplements you should be taking are herbal supplements and like discussed in this article, vegetables. The only problem with this article is that you claim that vitamins enhance cancer cells. Well, don't vegetables have vitamins? I think so! So you are therefore contradicting yourself! The problem isn't the vitamins enhancing cancer cells, the MAIN problem is taking vitamins from a bottle rather than fresh raw fruits and vegeatables! And please make sure your fruits are organic. e-mail me for more questions.

According to my knowledge, the study on which this article was based is flawed in the sense that many of the participants were smokers, and could have had undetected, or pre-cancerous growths - which the antioxidant nutrients went on to feed. Also, what is very important, was the fact that you have different quality vitamin supplements, we don't know the actual quality of the supplements given; lots of evidence suggests poor grade and synthetic supplements/nutrients such as vitamins and hormones can do more harm than good, maybe even no good!

If there was a study that was purely based on non-smokers, and quality supplements then the findings could be more enlightening. From what was shown, yes some nutrients (and these may only be be poor grade nutrients) may possibly feed cancer cells. But right now the results are purely speculative.

For now, there is too much evidence in favour of antioxidant supplements. The issue is, which companies do you trust, because there is a lot of crap out there.

There is a big difference between eating foods that are high in antioxidants and taking vitamin supplements. There is also a big difference between whole food supplements and vitamin supplements.

People were designed to eat food and are not going to die from too much vitamin A of vitamin D from eating foods. But vitamins do not grow on trees and do not exist in nature. They are not foods. From taking vitamin supplements you can die from taking too much vitamin A or D from liver failure. Taking to much causes hypervitaminosa A or hypervitaminosa D. Herbal supplements are whole food supplements.
