Just when you thought low-carb diets were dead.
A study done by dermatologist Dr. Neil Mann in Australia showed that teenagers who ate a high-protein, low-carb diet had less acne then those on a normal teenage diet.
Many factors contribute to acne, such as hormones — which teenagers have in abundance. A diet high in processed sugars can lead to weight gain. Obesity, in turn, causes hormone changes including the release of cortisol, a stress hormone that contributes to acne.
Eating a healthy low-glycemic diet that contains whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and lean protein is important for teens to stay fit and healthy. If it also helps reduce their acne, all the better.
